The patterns have been loud lately.
I don't say that to be cryptic. I say it because if you have trained yourself to look — really look — you can see the threads connecting things right now with startling clarity. The repetitions. The contradictions. The moments where people's actions and their stated beliefs run straight into each other and neither one blinks.
I've been sitting with something specific. A quiet irony that keeps surfacing.
Some of the people who handed me the lesson of look for the other perspective — who taught me, explicitly or by example, to turn a thing over and examine it from angles that weren't my own — seem to have set that lesson down somewhere. Or maybe they never really picked it up. Maybe what they were offering me wasn't a philosophy. Maybe it was a tool for getting me to land where they already were.
I took it seriously, though.
That part wasn't their intent. But it's what happened.
And now I can't unknow what I know. So here we are.
What Perspective-Taking Actually Is (And Isn't)
Here's the thing most people miss: genuine perspective-taking is not imagining how you would feel if you were in someone else's situation.
That's the most common version of it, and it's almost useless.
When you imagine yourself in someone else's shoes while still wearing your own socks — your own history, your own wounds, your own wiring, your own framework for what's fair and what's hard — you're not actually taking their perspective. You're just running your own perspective through a slightly different filter. You're asking what would I feel if this happened to me instead of the much harder question: what does this feel like to carry when you are them, shaped the way they are shaped, from where they came from, with what they know and don't know?
Real perspective-taking requires you to set yourself down first.
Not abandon yourself. Not betray your own truth. Just — set it on the table for a moment. Let it rest there while you step into something else. It's uncomfortable. It takes practice. And sometimes — often — it will show you that the world genuinely looks different from where someone else is standing, and that their view is not crazy or wrong, just different, shaped by a different set of accumulations.
Most people stop before they get there.
Because here's what happens when you do it right: your own perspective starts to look less like the truth and more like your truth. Which is still valuable. Still worth standing in. But suddenly it has edges and limits you didn't see before. And that's a hard thing to sit with if you were comfortable believing you were simply correct.
What the Land Teaches
I've been farming long enough to know that there is almost never one right read on what's happening outside.
The same rain that saves a pasture drowns a root system. The same hard freeze that kills what shouldn't have made it through winter protects what needed the dormancy. A dry spell that looks like disaster from the outside is sometimes what a particular plant needed to drive its roots deep enough to survive.
If you walk onto a piece of land and make your read from one spot, one angle, one moment in time — you will mismanage it. Guaranteed. You have to walk the whole thing. You have to get low to the ground and then stand at the high point and look back down. You have to watch it at different hours, in different weather, in different seasons. You have to ask what this land remembers that you weren't here for.
That's not a metaphor I'm forcing. That's just the actual practice of learning a piece of ground.
People are living systems too.
And they deserve at least the same rigor of observation we give the land.
The Harder Truth
There's a version of "consider other perspectives" that isn't that at all.
It's a manipulation dressed in the language of open-mindedness. It goes like this: look at this from all sides — until you arrive at my side. Examine every angle — until the angle you're standing on happens to be mine. Be open — until your openness leads you back to confirming what I already believed.
Once you learn genuine perspective-taking, this version becomes immediately obvious.
It has a particular feeling — a kind of pressure at the edges of the conversation, a narrowing of which views are considered valid, a way that some perspectives get taken seriously and others get quietly dismissed as uninformed or emotional or just wrong. The goalposts of "reasonable" shift in one direction only.
I'm not saying everyone who ever urged you toward perspective-taking was running this game. Most weren't. Most were offering something real, even if they applied it unevenly — the way most of us do, because we're human and perspective-taking is genuinely hard and we all have blind spots the size of barns.
But some were.
And it's worth knowing the difference. Not to become bitter about it. Not to stop being someone who looks for other angles — that skill is too valuable to surrender in cynicism. But to understand that the lesson itself is not the problem. The lesson is good. The lesson is worth keeping.
What you do with that knowledge is up to you.
What It Actually Looks Like in Practice
Since we're here, and since the whole point of The Stillroom is to go deeper rather than prettier, let me offer you what I've actually learned about how to do this — because it is a practice, and practice has mechanics.
1. Ask what they know that you don't. Before you disagree with someone's position, genuinely ask yourself: what information, experience, or history might they be working from that I don't have access to? Not as a rhetorical device. As a real question. Sometimes the answer is nothing, I think we have the same information and we just see it differently — and that's fine. But sometimes the answer opens something up.
2. Find the version of their view that makes sense. Every perspective, even one you find wrong or frustrating, has a version of it that is internally coherent given a particular set of experiences and values. Your job is to find that version. Not to agree with it — just to find it. If the only version of their view you can construct is the stupid or malicious one, you haven't done the work yet.
3. Notice where your framework is doing the work. A lot of what we call "seeing clearly" is actually just our own framework operating below the level of conscious thought. The things that feel obvious to us feel obvious because of everything we've accumulated — not because they're universally self-evident. Try asking yourself: what would I have to believe, or have lived through, for this to feel different?
4. Let two things be true. This might be the hardest one. Most of us were trained — implicitly or explicitly — toward an either/or way of resolving disagreement. One of us is right. One view wins. But in living systems — in people, in families, in communities, in farms — two things are almost always true at once. You can be genuinely hurt and also have played a role in what happened. Something can be unfair and also be something you have to navigate anyway. The land can be difficult and also be exactly where you're supposed to be.
Holding two things at once without collapsing into one of them is a muscle. It takes work. But it is the closest thing I know to actual wisdom.
Why I'm Writing This
Not to call anyone out.
I don't have any interest in turning my quiet observations into a public reckoning with specific people or situations. That's not what The Stillroom is for, and honestly, it's not how I operate.
But I do believe this: we are in a moment — personally, culturally, in our communities and in our families — where the ability to genuinely see from another angle is more important and more rare than it has ever been in my lifetime. And the people who can do it, who have practiced it, who have committed to it even when it was uncomfortable and even when it cost them something — those people are needed.

And you've probably felt the particular loneliness of being someone who can hold multiple truths in a room full of people choosing one.
Hold it anyway.
Turn it over anyway.
The land keeps teaching. The seasons keep shifting. The patterns keep showing up for anyone willing to look.
